MICR Symbol Guide

Symbol Name Plain-English Meaning Common Use
Transit Symbol Usually wraps or marks a bank routing/transit number. Routing number section on checks and some remittance coupons.
On-Us Symbol Usually marks customer account, biller account, or check/coupon reference data. Account number, check number, internal remittance reference.
Amount Symbol Often used around encoded amount fields. Bank proof/amount fields, less common on customer-facing coupons.
Dash Symbol Separator inside longer MICR fields. Separates subcodes, branch codes, coupon references, or internal IDs.
